Some Tweets I’m Proud Of

My TwitterI want to be a better writer. That’s the main thing. It’s one of the primary reasons I’m still plugging away at this blog: I know I have a lot of room to improve, and the only way to do that is to write a lot and read a lot, and then write and read some more. It still feels too soon to tell (I’ve only been on Twitter since August of 2011), but I think using Twitter has been, or can be, another aid in learning to write more effectively. Creativity tends to thrive under limitations, and learning to make oneself clear in only a few words is a useful thing. Mastering the short message should ensure that long form writing stays tightly constructed and propulsive instead of seeping onto my keyboard as a bloated, meandering mess. I hope so, anyway.

With that in mind, I scrolled down into oblivion today to take another look at what I’d done with over 2,500 tweets (if that sounds like a bunch, it’s not). The ephemeral nature of the Twitter stream means that yesterday’s messages are practically ancient history. Two-year-old tweets, on that scale, are Mesozoic. However, there are at least a few of my own tweets that I feel compelled to rescue from the river Lethe. Many of the rest of them (discounting “retweets,” links and so forth) are rightly disposable; some are illustrative of the fact that you can write something and think it makes sense, but later see plenty of room for misinterpretation. I’m happy to keep those tweets buried, but I also want to preserve a few that felt witty or meaningful at the time and that I still like today. These are they.
