My 100 Favorite Songs of the Lustrum (60-51)

2010-2014 0560. “Do What U Want” – Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly

This song contains multitudes. Part exposé on the reality of objectification, part R. Kelly creepshow.

59. “Dark Fantasy” – Kanye West

Strong opening track from my second favorite album of the last five years, with some of Yeezy’s smartest lyrics.

58. “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)” – Fall Out Boy

A welcome return to form for the pop punk group. Probably my favorite among their comically long titles.

57. “Not Afraid” – Eminem

This is the closest Eminem will ever get to recapturing the “Lose Yourself” magic. Earnest and, for once, self-aware.

56. “My Kind of Love” – Emeli Sandé

Honest, poetic confession of love.

55. “Heaven Knows” – The Pretty Reckless

Giddily abrasive alt-rock anthem.

54. “Radioactive” – Imagine Dragons

Indie rock meets dubstep. Shouldn’t work. Does.

53. “Freedom” – Anthony Hamilton & Elayna Boynton

Swaying old-school R&B, the surprisingly perfect score to a Blaxploitation Western about slavery.

52. “Changed Forever” – TobyMac featuring Nirva Ready

Christian rap-rock that’s actually pretty cool, with a booming chorus.

51. “Stuttering” – Fefe Dobson

Piano-driven pop R&B, highlighted by Ms. Dobson’s impressive vocal range.
